ABSTRACT

This paper attempts to examine the trends and significant determinants of Canadian outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). We examine the degree of the impact of various factors on OFDI from the perspective of the home and host countries. Using the panel data regression techniques for the period of 1990 to 2017, this study identifies the important determinants of Canadian OFDI. Our results show that OFDI has obvious lag effect, the value of OFDI in the current period is significantly affected by the previous period. The GDP of the investing country and the distance between the two countries are also important determinants of OFDI. Canadian enterprises tend to choose countries with a high level of economic development, close geographical proximity, and long and stable trade relations when selecting their OFDI location. Finally, this paper offers a new insight into significant determinants of Canadian OFDI which is helpful for Canadian enterprises to choose a more reasonable location.
